Tennis Club Sessions

CLUB SESSIONS

Now the weather is getting warmer, more of us are coming down to club sessions. Attendance at our Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday sessions is free to all adult and advanced junior tennis members and we want everyone to get the most out of their experience. Our Tuesday drop-in session is also open to Silver members.

The following arrangements are intended to make things run smoothly

Peg board

We want to ensure that everyone gets a fair number of games and that the person picking the next game has a good choice of players. That’s where our peg board comes in. We know that some of you are unfamiliar with the peg board or just don’t like it but, when used as intended, it does work! The person at the far left of the board is ‘in the chair’ and picks the next game. To speed things up, if this is you, don’t wait till a court is free before making your choice, pick the next game ahead of time, tell the other players they are next on and inform the person now at the head of the queue that it is their turn to pick. After your game don’t forget to return your peg to the board. There is a simplified peg system for use at the Tuesday session if it gets busy.

Short sets/sudden death deuce

To speed up play and avoid lengthy sit-outs, some time ago we asked players at club sessions to end matches once one side had reached 4 games. In addition, we introduced sudden death deuce if other people were waiting to play. This practice should continue.

Knocking up

While we recognise the value of knocking up, when it is busy we ask that players restrict their warm-up on court to no more than 5 to 10 minutes.

Visitors

We have always allowed members to bring guests of a suitable standard along to club sessions by prior agreement on payment of a small fee. However, we have recently seen an increase in players from other Ebbisham sections and non-members attending club sessions. These club sessions are intended for tennis members. It has therefore been decided to increase the fee for visitors attending club sessions to £10 per visit. All visitors will need to sign in at the bar and must be the guest of a named member. This will apply from 1 May. The normal guest fee of £4 will remain for visits outside club sessions.

Advanced juniors

You will notice there are a few new names on the peg board. A number of young players from Callum’s coaching programme have now reached the required standard and have been accepted as Advanced Juniors. As such they enjoy the same rights as our adult members – please make them welcome at club sessions.

Court etiquette - A few gentle reminders

As a consideration to the other players

  • While sometimes we are tempted in the heat of an on-court battle to swear or use other offensive language – please try not to. That applies off-court too.
  • If a game is in progress on the adjoining court, please wait till the end of a point when entering or leaving the courts.
  • We do not insist on ‘whites’, but please wear tennis-appropriate clothing when on court.
  • Glass – For safety reasons, please do not take any glass onto court.
  • Please remember to make use of the brushes and foot bath every time you come off court, not just the end of the session.
  • And finally, the courts need to be dragged and the lines cleaned at the end of each session. Please take your turn at this so the courts are left as you would wish to find them.

We look forward to seeing you on court

With kind regards

The Tennis Committee
