FRESH TENNIS NEWS – UPCOMING EVENTS YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS - Amended with attachments

Dear tennis members

FURTHER UPDATE ON TOURNAMENTS/MASTERCLASSES

  • Monday 26 May – Bank Holiday tournament (10am start) & BBQ (1pm)

It’s not too late to book your place – in fact late entries to the tournament still accepted on the day. BUT if you want to eat please let Lesley know by noon this Thursday . You can complete the poll on the tennis at Ebbisham WhatsApp group, message her or email her lesley.coles1@btinternet.com .

The tournament will follow our popular self-regulating handicap scheme. Players go on court with a variety of partners for a series of levels and mixed doubles, carrying their own score with them to the end of the contest. Prizes for the leading lady and gent.

On offer at the bbq this time will be Porky White’s sausages, burgers, Terry’s special chicken and a selection of salads, plus desserts.

Both the tournament and bbq are open to Ebbisham members and guests – Tournament entry is £2.50 and the bbq is £7.50 – in cash please on the day.

  • Friday 6 June – Bright Ideas for Tennis Masterclasses with former Davis Cup players (7-8pm for the rest of us, 8-9pm for our higher level players)

On 22 February a small group of players from Ebbisham took part in a 24-hour sponsored tennis marathon in aid of the Bright Ideas for Tennis ‘I Play 30’ disability tennis programme. They asked for your support and boy did you all step up! In all, the team raised over £10k, outdoing teams from far larger clubs. As a reward for being the club raising the most money, Ex-pros Danny Sapsford and James Aukland from Bright Ideas for Tennis will be at Ebbisham running 2 x 1-hour coaching sessions. There will be no charge for the sessions which are open to all tennis members playing in the adult section.

As announced earlier, details on how to sign up were revealed at yesterday’s AGM and a list was opened. However, just because you were unable to attend the AGM, you have not missed out on a chance to take part – The list closes next Sunday (25 May) – it is now on the tennis notice board, but if you won’t be at the club in time to sign up, just contact Lesley before then and she will add you to the list. We anticipate the classes will be over-subscribed – in which case all names will be placed in a hat at the Bank Holiday event and drawn at random. These players will then be allocated to the most suitable session. Please don’t take offence if you are not included in the higher group – we can’t all be top dogs – each session will be geared to the participants.

At the end of the second session there will be a short demonstration match involving the pros and 2 Ebbisham players.

Even if you don’t want to join them on court or aren’t successful in the ballot, please come along for what should be a fun and informative evening – There will be a chance to chat with Danny and James at the end of the sessions and the BBQ will be fired up for sausages and burgers.

  • Tennis club championships

This year’s event is now underway, with a record number of participants. Competitors will be kept up to date by the organiser, but if anyone else is interested in progress, draws can be found on the tennis notice board – these will be updated regularly.

  • Alan Baggett Trophy

Not till 26 July – but worth putting in your diaries now.

Wishing you a good summer of tennis

With kind regards

The Tennis Committee
