Badminton Hall - New lighting to be installed w/b 12th August

Dear [[firstname]]

As badminton players we have all got used to our hall lighting over the years. However, despite the current tubes having been upgraded to LED several years ago the current lighting is a long way off current lighting guidelines for club badminton, a fact that we have been aware of for many years.

Following consultation with Badminton England, and as a result of discussions with, and proposals from, various sports lighting companies, various lighting configurations have been considered with the key point of minimising glare (the most important factor when playing).

Computer modelling has shown the configuration of 4 luminaires down each side of the court at a height of 6 metres (our current ones are at 5 metres) to be closest to the optimal one in terms of achieving the guidelines required while minimising glare. The image below provides an idea of the configuration.

The new lighting is scheduled to be installed from Monday 12th August and is likely to take 5 working days, which means that all three courts will be out of action for this week.

The difference in the lighting will be significant, as the new guidelines ensure that the lighting intensity is not only many times greater than the current value at the centre of the court, but is more uniform across the whole of the court.

It is hoped that the timing of the installation should ensure that all members have time to adjust to the new lighting before the beginning of the new season and the start of matches.

Kind regards

The Badminton Committee
